ALEXANDRA AMIROV
artistic director/choreographer
Alexandra Amirov was born in the Caucasus Mountains of Russia, moved to Israel when she was five years old, and immigrated to the United States at the age of eighteen.
While in Israel Alexandra studied ballet, synchronized swimming, lyrical gymnastics and ballroom dancing with the leading Israeli ballroom dance company Tsizapers.
In NYC she joined the renowned Eddie Torres Latin Dance Company, performing with them for six years. Alexandra got her MA in Dance and Education from Hunter College, where she studied ballet, modern and contemporary, improvisation and choreography.
In 2012, Alexandra received the Best Choreography Award from Hunter College for her piece Shiv’ah, and the Director's Choice Award from the Gowanus Arts Center for her piece Black Cuts, Body. In 2013, Alexandra started Amirov Dance Theater. The company’s work has been presented in New York City at The Ailey Citigroup Theater, Dixon Place, The Green Space, Movement Research, The Gowanus Arts Center, The Sheen Center, The Tank, La MaMa Moves and The Hudson Guild Theater. In Addition to live performance the company also does movement based film works. The company’s dance on camera film, a_SymMetrics, was presented at numerous film festivals in Europe and the US.
In addition to working with her dance company, Alexandra was commissioned to choreograph numerous musical theater productions for the Concordia Conservatory and the award winning feature film Thirsty in 2013. Alexandra teaches dance and choreographic process in NY, NJ, and Long Island. She currently resides in Manhattan, NYC.
